History of American Pit Bull TerriersAmerican Pit Bull Terriers, more commonly known as pitbulls, are a medium-sized, solidly built breed of dog originally developed in England, Ireland and Scotland. The dogs were first developed during the 19th century as breeders in sought to develop a dog with athleticism as well as solid muscle structure and build. They crossed bulldogs and terriers to attain dogs with the desired traits. Immigrants from these countries later brought their dogs to the United States, where the breed became one of the most popular for family dogs, due to their friendliness towards people. (According to Wikipedia, the dog in the Little Rascals movies was an American Pit Bull Terrier.) Pitbulls also became widely used as ranch dogs, helping to drive livestock and catch semi-wild cattle. Two professional dog breeder associations were formed specifically for APBTs, namely the United Kennel Club and the American Dog Breeders Association. These associations continue to exist and provide a community for proud owners of American Pit Bull Terriers. The American Pit Bull Terrier is also a very well rounded dog breed. For example, of the twenty-five dogs to have earned UKC "superdog" status, meaning they gained championship titles in obedience, agility, conformation, and weight-pull, over half have been American Pit Bull Terriers.
